Burns & McDonnell Structural CAD Technician - Energy (Kansas City) in Kansas City, Missouri

Description

Our CAD Technicians are responsible for revising existing drawings and preparing drawings of basic components from explicit verbal or written instructions or detailed sketches. This position successfully plots drawings; learns and follows company and client drafting standards and procedures; learns the practices of a selected discipline. Other duties as assigned.

Opportunities as a CAD Technician exist in multiple market segments and locations. Specific assignments and project work vary depending on the market segments and locations. Please see below for information on each market:

Energy

Performs analysis and design of electrical systems for new power-generating facilities, as well as upgrades to existing facilities. Responsibilities include conceptual design, load flow / short circuit / arc-flash analysis studies, system optimization, equipment specification, electrical infrastructure design, protective relay calculations and settings, configuration, and field commissioning of electrical systems and equipment.

Energy-Structural detailers and designers build Smart3D models of concrete foundations and structural steel, while working closely with our engineers and supporting the work of the other Energy disciplines, for our power plant clients. Most of our Structural drawings are generated from those Smart3D project models by our detailers and designers, with the remainder created in AutoCAD or MicroStation. Our Structural work consists of foundations for supporting large equipment including combustion and steam turbines, to buildings housing complete combined cycle power plants and water treatment facilities.

  • Prepare new drawings and revise existing engineering drawings of basic components from specific sketches or layouts.

  • Responsible for adhering to company and client drafting standards and procedures.

  • Responsible for adhering to the drafting practices of selected discipline.

  • Assist in drafting design and documentation for various projects.

  • Assist with tasks utilizing standard drafting detail programs.

  • Assist in continuous drafting detail improvement efforts.

  • Research solutions to project concerns and present solutions to design problems.

  • Assist with ad hoc projects as assigned by managers.

  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma and course work in drafting technology or specialized CAD certification or 1-year relevant drafting experience.

  • Associate's degree or bachelor's degree in computer aided drafting/design preferred.

  • Basic knowledge of commands in at least one CAD program; ability to occasionally use higher-level commands, time saving programs and routines.

  • Basic knowledge and experience in multiple CAD systems preferred (including 3D).

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills.

  • Ability to work in collaborative team environment.

  • Basic knowledge and experience in Microsoft Office programs, including, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills.

  • Self-motivated and eager learner, aptitude to grow and develop within the field.

  • Ability to meet deadlines and budget.

  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without requiring future sponsorship for employment visa status.
