Burns & McDonnell Entry-Level Instrument & Controls Engineer in Kansas City, Missouri


The Assistant Instrument & Controls (I&C) Engineer will assist either multi-disciplinary or controls-specific engineering teams in developing Instrument & Controls Engineering design packages and support maintenance of capital projects.

Work includes design for sensing and controlling pressure, temperature, level, flow and other parameters. This group purchases all instrumentation and controlled valves in the design of ethanol & bio-fuels plants, chemical plants, power plants, refineries, food processing, and consumer products plants. A construction package is created by this group that locates all instrumentation in a plant and shows all wiring to the main plant computer systems. Complex equipment is purchased for analyzing chemical composition products in the plant. Design of plant instrumented safety systems and computer control of equipment is accomplished by the instrumentation group. Responsibilities include:

  • Assist in preparing control systems (DCS and/or PLC), Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems (CEMS) and instrument specifications and procurement packages.

  • Assist in designing control system logic and configuration, graphic interfaces, and Input/Output (I/O) lists.

  • Assist in coordinating and managing all vendor I/O and instrument lists; coordinate I/O to determine partitioning of the control system hardware.

  • Assist with control system upgrades and migrations.

  • Assist in verifying and performing design calculations, project studies and report preparation.

  • Assist with the preparation of instrumentation design deliverables, including Instrument List, Instrument Construction Specifications, Instrument Installation Details, and Instrument Location Plans.

  • Assist in developing specifications and site study for design of systems; provide assistance with piping and instrumentation diagram (P&ID) design including instrumentation and related mechanical design.

  • Assist in providing Instrument, I/O, and DCS electrical connection diagrams.

  • Assist in evaluating technical bids and managing vendor contracts.

  • Assist in reviewing and approving vendor drawings.

  • Assist with Factory Acceptance Tests, control wiring design, and logic design.

  • Assist with commissioning at project site.

  • Ensure compliance with company and site safety policies.

  • All other duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering from accredited program required.

  • Engineer-In-Training (EIT) Certification recommended.

  • Intern and/or related experience preferred.

  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.

  • Ability to clearly communicate both verbal and written technical information.

  • Attention to detail.

  • Must be proficient in the use of computer software (i.e., Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access).

  • Valid driver's license required. In addition, must meet standards to qualify for and maintain the Company's vehicle driving privileges as outlined in the Company's Motor Vehicle Safety Policy.
