Burns & McDonnell Assistant Civil/Environmental Engineer - Environmental Services (Kansas City) in Kansas City, Missouri

The Assistant Environmental Engineer will work under the supervision of a licensed professional engineer to assist project teams to create world class designs for new projects, alterations, and redevelopments on a variety of projects. Our Environmental Services Engineering team supports a variety of projects typically related to solid waste management, stormwater quality and management, site development, remediation, biogas, and sustainability.

The nature of our projects and clients afford staff early career opportunities to interface with clients, participate in pursuits, and represent Burns & McDonnell in thought leadership and conference presentations. A successful candidate will be highly self-motivated with an eagerness to embrace ongoing challenges associated with the wide variety of environmental projects we support. The Assistant Civil/Environmental Engineer will have the following areas of responsibility:

  • Perform tasks requiring application of standard civil and/or environmental engineering design concepts, principles, practices, codes, techniques, and procedures.

  • Support the engineering design of projects from conceptual planning through design completion and often construction completion.

  • Assist lead engineers with various project duties including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Prepare engineering drawings (typically in AutoCAD Civil 3D).

  • Prepare engineering technical specifications.

  • Prepare technical reports and letters.

  • Research and compile project-related data.

  • Review and complete applicable permitting requirements.

  • Prepare supporting calculations and basis of design components.

  • Review shop drawings and other contractor submittals.

  • Assist in performing field inspections, including construction quality assurance (CQA) field oversight roles during construction activities. Construction CQA activities may commonly include oversight of landfill or pond liner system installation (e.g., geosynthetic and/or clay liner) and completion of associated field documentation.

  • Demonstrate time management, communication, and organizational skills to often work on multiple projects (and scope types) concurrently.

  • Complete and remain up-to-date on required trainings (e.g., safety, quality, diversity).

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering (or related degree) from an ABET-accredited program.

  • Completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam strongly preferred.

  • Minimum of 3.0 GPA strongly preferred.

  • 1-3 years of related professional experience preferred.

  • Previous internship and/or consulting experience preferred.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Strong attention to detail, team collaboration, and organization skills.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Experience with computer software including AutoCAD, MicroStation, BIM (Revit), ArcGIS, and stormwater modeling programs (PondPack, HydroCAD, HEC-RAS, etc.) preferred.

  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without requiring future sponsorship for employment visa status.
